Static balance refers to balance in the situation in which a set position must be maintained for a period of time, as in target sports like archery ad shooting; here the maintenance of a balanced and stable posture is essential for attaining accuracy. In archery, static balance has to be maintained while a force is applied (Hayri E. and Rafet I, 2006). For example, in archery there is a reaction force due to bow movement and the shooting of the arrow. High levels of balance in a sporting activity are dependent on the area of the base of support, the position of the center of gravity and the mass (body weight) of the performer. A wide, but comfortable, positioning of the feet aids the static balance in archery (David Lloyd, 2010). Thus, the area of the base of support is maximised within the ability of the performer to control his or her posture. In Archery there is a force of motion called inertia. According the Newton’s first law, an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force, and an object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force (Archery and Shooting Olympic Games, 2010). For example, the firing of the arrow is related to Newton’s first law, when pulling the string of the bow back and then letting it go. The inertia of the string carries the arrow outwards giving it speed and continues in the same motion and speed until it is stopped by the target that it hits. The position of the fulcrum, lead or effort used when firing the arrow, determines what class lever is used in archery. Because the effort is used in pulling the string back, the load is at the front where the nocking point is and the fulcrum is at the lower limb, this shows that the action of firing the arrow uses the first class lever (1996, Lever Action Archery Bow). Similarities include a similar size of base of support, as both the feet are in line with the shoulders. Another important similarity between me and the professional is that our left arms are straight, so when we fire the arrow, our aim is more stable. However there are differences that can be seen between these two images, such as my right arm being pulled too far back, unlike the professional, where his arm is only pulled back at his chin. Another difference is the direction of our aims. My arrow seems to be pointing more low than the professionals shot, causing my arrow to have a less accurate shot at the bullseye. The professional’s line of gravity is perfectly straight in the center of his body, though my line of gravity is on a slight angle, as my posture is not as straight when I fire. Lastly, my elbow is slightly pointing upwards when, like the professional, it should be facing straight in line with my arm. Thus, there are few similarities between the two images which shows that some of my technique is correct, however there are obvious differences which proves that there are few areas of improvement in my technique, for me to perform better. Two main areas of improvements that I should be working on, is my accuracy and my line of gravity. In order to improve my accuracy, my elbow must not be pointing upwards, so my aim and shot will be more accurate, thus I will perform better. When drawing the string, the elbow must come around enough to be as much in line as possible. When doing this, it will help in setting the rear scapula down, which will keep a low rear shoulder and fill the back muscles as much as possible. As soon as the drawing takes place, The Law of Acceleration will apply. Consequently drawing positively will improve your performance, instead of drawing slowly and cautiously. This will also obtain the drawing elbow into line early (KSL International Archery, 2008). To correct my line of gravity I must have a better posture before firing. Leaning back in archery is unhelpful as it leaves the body unbalanced, with the front shoulder rising out of the socket. The spine should remain vertical throughout the process of drawing the bow and shotting the arrow, as it will place the line of gravity in the enter, allowing you to perform better and be balanced (Imperial College Archery Club, 2000). Sport psychology is another technique that is positively effective in your performance, and it is said that 85% of the success in archery is due to mental and physiological factors (Alain Geiser, 2008-2009). Two specific psychology techniques that I use when performing archery are concentration and positive thinking, which I find very effective in my performance. Conce ntration is the action or power of focusing one’s attention or mental effort and positive thinking is the act of thinking good or affirmative thoughts. When I concentrate, it gives me self-control, which is essential. I concentrate specially on the target and my goal, avoiding everything around me. This will keep me from distractions and I can control the timing of when and where to shoot. The positive thinking encourages me to not give up and keep on trying, and is the answer to momentary difficulties. It also stops me from regretting the first bad arrow shots and to try to improve my next shot, which I find helpful. In conclusion analysing your performance helps you identify what specific techniques you need to improve on in the sport. When analysing my performance in Archery, relating to correct biomechanical principles, and identifying areas of improvement in my techniques, gives me a better understanding of proper skills I should use, that will lead to a successful performance. The escape from the previous culture however allows Amir to escape the incident of rape upon his best friend Hassan which has left a bad taste on his childhood. In America Amir doesn’t turn away from his Middle Eastern culture, and asks Soraya’s father, the general for permission to marry her even though he spurns it slightly by talking to her privately without consent. Amir towards the end, becomes proud of his blended culture. Although he enjoys visiting Pakistan, eating the traditional food and hearing references to childhood legends, he also likes the feeling of hope and freedom he gained from America. Social Inequality From childhood, Amir recognizes the difference in social standing between himself and best friend Hassan. As a Pashtun, Amir enjoys privileges of being a higher class and his father being a successful man whereas Hassan is poor and he and his father face prejudice from people every day. Despite this, Hassan and Ali are content with their lower class life and are good natured human beings. Hosseini is trying to convey that your social standing in society does not determine what kind of person you are and if you are better than someone else. You can only truly be better than someone else morally and having saint-like characteristics. During Amir and Hassan childhood, they’re differences of social class are conveyed by living standards, Hassan being illiterate and physical appearances. These are individually important but as a whole they all convey irony in the fact that it is Hassan who is content with life and Amir who is not. Later in the novel, Hazara prejudice which is taken to the extreme as they are massacred and abused by Taliban officials, such as Assef. When Sohrab returns with Amir to America, Amir is quick to dispel any mention of class as he believes it is has influenced his and Sohrab’s life too greatly and he perhaps finally sees them as his equals which he was afraid to do so as a child(never referring to Hassan as his friend). Personal Responsibility Many of the actions of the main character stem from personal responsibility. Baba takes on the responsibility of Ali from his father, who took him in when he was a child. He lets Ali and his son work for him, offers them shelter and food; making them feel part employees and part family. Air later realises this ‘personal responsibility’ baba showed for Ali may stem from his guilt of betraying Ali and fathering Hassan. Amir feels responsible for all the bad occurrences which happened to Hassan and his father. He feels many of the events which occurred later in the novel are down to him being too cowardly to prevent Hassan being raped. Though many suffer from the Taliban’s ruthlessness, he believes the events that happened to Hassan’s family are his responsibility/fault. The feeling of responsibility is what drives Amir to return to Afghanistan, to rescue Sohrab. Rahim Khan plants this idea in Amir’s head and suggests this is the way to achieve closure and absolution for the past. After he rescues Sohrab, Amir feels responsible for the boy in a different way and wants to protect him from anymore pain; furthermore, he sees Sohrab as a way to fill the emptiness in the marriage from his and Sorayas infidelity. Identity and Self- discovery Throughout the novel the protagonist struggles to find his true purpose and find his identity through noble actions. Amir’s failure to be loyal to his friend at such a crucial moment defines this conflict. His endeavour to overcome his own weaknesses appear in confronting Assef, returning to a war torn country oppressed by the Taliban and even his carsickness whilst during with Farid. The revelation of baba later in chapter 17, allows Amir to discover who his father really was and how alike they were in terms of betraying people who loved and were loyal to the end to them. The return to Afghanistan allows Amir to find out the type of man he can become and to confront his past which he has so desperately tried to bottle up. Family, Fathers and Fatherhood Family relationships play a great part in this novel but mothers are strikingly absent. Amir and Hassan grow up without their mothers and this is exemplified through the tension of Baba’s treatment of his sons. He makes it clear he is disappointed Amir is bookish, cowardly to protect his social standing and stick up for Hassan whilst on the other hand, he never publically acknowledges Hassan as his own son- although he shows a great deal of affection to Hassan. Likewise, General Taheri is a similar traditional, highly critical father who chafes his daughter for rebellious behaviour. The theme of family is then reintroduced when Amir and Soraya are unsuccessful in starting their own- punishment perhaps for their pasts or that Amir has yet to face up to his. The adoption of the troubled Sohrab however, provides them with the attempt to begin a complete family based on love and honesty. Journey and Quest The novel is mostly based around Amirs departure from Afghanistan as a young teenager and his return as a middle aged man to the war-torn country. At the same time, it is a symbolic quest. Amir makes great sacrifices to pursue his quest to atone for past sins by rescuing his nephew Sohrab in the hands of the Taliban. Symbolised at the beginning of the novel with Amir cutting his fingers with the kite string in order to sacrifice himself for his father’s love, sacrifice plays a big theme also. Amir towards the end of the novel again, willingly cuts his fingers, to revive his spiritually wounded nephew who is suffering from depression. By the end of the novel, this significant symbol of sacrifice shows how much Amir has morally developed as he is willing to sacrifice much in order to save Sohrab from a similar fate and to protect him. The most part of the novel is Amir hiding from his past and by returning to Kabul he is taking that all important journey to have complete redemption. Political power and Abuse The events of the novel occur against the backdrop of political change, the rise of the Taliban government. Assef, Hassans rapist and bully, who becomes a high ranking Taliban officer, embodies the consequence of abuse of power and violence and oppression caused by the Taliban. Assef is a sociopath who thrives in the atmosphere of chaos. Interpersonal violence leads to the split of Hassan and Amir; on a national scale the abuse of power by communist backed soviets results in massacres and Afghanistan forces to go into exile. The abuse of power and abuse is an important reference to how the hazara’s have been treated. From humiliation at the beginning of the novel for their looks to being massacred and horrifically abused. When General Taheri demands an explanation for their adoption of Sohrab, he echoes the discrimination against this entire ethnic minority and in a sense, Baba also condones the attitude towards Hazara’s by not admitting that he fathered a Hazara son. Kites After Hassan gets raped while running his kite, Amir cannot separate kite fighting and running from his own betrayal and cowardice. Therefore, even after all of his injuries and trials on Sohrabs behalf, it is the act of kite running that finally makes him feel redeemed. Beyond their significance to the plot, kites have multiple layers of symbolism in the story. One of these layers involves the class difference between Amir and Hassan, which largely dictates and limits their relationship. In kite fighting, one boy controls the kite while the other assists by feeding the string. Just as Hassan makes Amirs breakfast, folds his clothes, and cleans his room, so does he cater to Amir in kite tournaments. Even though Hassan shares in the excitement of kite fighting, he does not actually have control over the kite. Hassan may help the kite lift-and-dive, but Amir is the one who claims a victory. Hassan may catch a cherished rival kite and hold it in his arms, but always to bring it back to Amir, to whom it then belongs. His joy is vicarious, just like his experience of wealth and privilege while living in Babas household. In order to free himself of selfishness and cowardice, Amir must go from being merely a kite fighter-someone who seeks glory-to a kite runner, someone who genuinely does things for others. The activity of kite fighting is violent by nature. The kites battle and so too do the children flying them. The string, which is covered in ground glass, carves deep gashes into the fliers hands as they try to cut each other down, and once kites fall out of the sky, the kite runners retrieve them with the same furious determination as, say, a hunting dog does a slain bird. In its violence, kite fighting represents the conflicts that rage Afghanistan nearly throughout the course of the novel. When Hosseini paints us a picture of hundreds of kites trying haphazardly and with great determination to cut each other down, he shows us also the warring factions of Afghanistan overthrowing one another. Web technologies have only added to the benefits provided by data warehousing and has paved the way for easy delivery of critical information. In order to include the unstructured data in the data warehouses, the vendors are considering multimedia like images and texts as just another data type. They are stor ed as binary large objects and are considered to be a part of the relational data. They are defined as user-defined-types by the user-defined-functions. But it is not possible to simply consider all binary large objects as relational data type. That is because, if we were to consider video clips, there would be a need for a server that is able to support delivery of multiple video streams at a given rate along with audio synchronisation. After having included unstructured data in the data warehouses, there should also be a way to search for this data. Without proper ways to search for this data, the integration of unstructured data will prove rather useless. Vendors have now started providing search engines so that the user is able to search for all the information that he/she requires. The example of such a mechanism would be the query by images mechanism. Its purpose is to let the user search for pre-indexed images on the basis of their shape, size and colour. Data visualisation Data visualization is necessary to improve the performance of the user in terms of analysis. The users expect to see the query results in the form of charts or graphics. If the query results are in the form of spread sheets, it affects the quickness and ease by which the users can carry out the analysis. It also means that the data warehouse is outdated. Dependency overrides There are some special circumstances which may warrant what's called a dependecy override, where your parents' financial information is not taken into account when you apply for federal aid. Common dependency override situations include being married, having kids, homelessness, military service, being in the foster care system, or legal emancipation. If you think you could qualify for a dependency override, you should also gather any important documentation around your special circumstances (for example, any paperwork that would support your claims). Just answer the questions about these circumstances honestly when you fill out your FAFSA. The application will process as incomplete, and you'll need to follow up with the financial aid office of the school you're seeking an aid package from. Step 3: Choose Your Submission Method Choose the path that works best for you. There are two main methods to submit your FAFSA and apply for a Pell Grant. Here, I'll discuss the pros and cons of both methods. Electronic submission The electronic version of the FAFSA is easier and faster than the paper version.The FAFSA website guides you through the application process, and can even notify you about certain errors in real time. You'll receive the results from your submission - a document that tells you about your eligbility for different types of financial aid - in about 3 days. This document is called a Student Aid Report, or SAR. If you plan on submitting your FAFSA online, apply for a FSA ID for you and your parents first! You need a FSA to sign the electronic FAFSA - it can take up to three days to receive your FSA ID, so build this into your timeline. You can access the elctronic version of the FAFSA here. Paper Submission Paper FAFSAs are a bit more cumbersome than the electronic version, and take longer to file (it can be weeks before you get your SAR). Applicants also make more mistakes on the paper FAFSA, and mistakes delay the processing of your application. You should avoid paper submission if you are at all tight on time. You can get a paper copy of the FAFSA at high school guidance offices, college financial aid offices, and at many libraries. You can also download and print a copy of the application yourself here. Step 4: Set Up a Time to Complete Your Application If you've already collected all the necessary paperwork and chosen a submission method, completing the actual application shouldn't betoo difficult. You've already done most of the legwork! As I mentioned above, you need a lot of information from your parents in order to successfully complete the FAFSA. If possible, set up a time when you can go through the application together with your parents - this can help streamline the process if you have questions for them. Schedule 1-2 hours if you are submitting the application electronically. Give yourself some extra time (2-3 hours) if you are submitting a paper application. Side note: You don't need an accountant or financial aid consultant in order to fill out the FAFSA, but if you do have access to these resources, they should be able to assist you with any questions. Step 5: After You Submit The good news: if you submitted a complete FAFSA, you'll be automatically considered for a Pell Grant - no further work required! You should receive an email within 3-5 days of submission including directions to access your SAR (if you submitted electronically - if not, the process will take longer). The colleges you listed on your FAFSA will have access to your SAR shortly after you do. If your application was complete, your SAR will include something called an EFC, or Expected Family Contribution. The EFC is a number used by schools to put together financial aid packages, which can include grants, loans, and scholarships. If you are offered the Pell Grant, it will be included in schools' financial aid packages. If you ever need to check the status of your application, you can call the Federal Student Aid Information center at 1-800-433-3243. You can also log in to the FAFSA website with your FSA ID. Common Questions on the Pell Grant Application This process can be confusing - hopefully all your questions are answered here! I submitted a FAFSA last year. Do I have to do it again for this upcoming school year? Answer: Yes! You need to apply for aid every year. See Step #1 above for a guide on submission timelines. My brother/sister already submitted a FAFSA this year. Do I need to do one too? Answer: Yes - even though it might seem redundant (you're submitting the same family information, right?) each person applying for aid needs to submit their own FAFSA. I want to submit my FAFSA before my family's tax returns are ready. Can I do that? Answer: You can! You'll just need to make estimates about this information as best you can (your parents should be able to help with this). You'll have to update your application if necessary. I want to make changes to my FAFSA after I submitted it. How do I do that? Answer: You'll have to wait until after you've received your SAR before you can make changes. You can use your FSA ID to make corrections on the FAFSA website, and should receive a new SAR shortly thereafter. You can also make changes to the paper SAR if you originally submitted via snail mail - just follow instructions on the SAR, send it back in, and wait for a new SAR to be generated. What's Next?
